Lacanian mirrors For lacan the mirror stage is the stage in which a child tries to find a unified self. It sees a unified body form of itself which becomes an extension of the ego. This unified body is a defence to the anxiety caused by thinking of the self as fragmented pieces so this fragmentation is transformed into a unified image of the self
